“Only when firmly grounded in a strong real self can we live and share our lives with others in ways that are healthy, straightforward expressions of our deepest needs and desires, and in doing so find fufillment and meaning.”
Quote by Dr James F Masterson M.D, who was the founder of the Psychoanalytic Masterson Institute
It’s your time to have the life you deserve

Our Approach
-
The Psychoanalytic Masterson Approach is grounded in developmental and attachment theory, showing how most of our struggles are caused by arrested self-development and therefore therapy is centred on developing the real self in order to be fully functioning in all aspects of life.
If we do not know ourselves, we can end up reacting to the world around us, rather than creating the life for ourselves. We can see our problems as being caused by others instead of taking back control of our lives.
You might find yourself held back by certain emotions, fears, or limiting beliefs that keep derailing you. Sometimes. a pattern of behaviour can end up controlling us.
Through the Masterson approach, we understand that whatever feelings remain suppressed end up being displaced as a reaction, or acted out in our behaviour. We can re-enact our past or repeat what we have not worked through. In order to address our behaivour, we need to deal with what is underneath it.
Our emotional responses in any situation are often shaped by our inner world, influencing how we perceive and interact in our environment. Our past experiences, particularly challenging ones, can significantly color our perspective and trigger emotional responses until we address the underlying issues. However, we do not have to remain confined by our past. In fact, we can move past the areas that hold us back, if we understand how to mobilize ourselves.
-
The essence of the Masterson psychoanalytic approach focuses on breaking through our subconscious defense mechanisms and blind spots in order to locate the real self. Our capacity to understand others and the world around us stems from our level of understanding ourselves.
Disconnection from our authentic selves often manifests as feeling lost, stuck in life, or a general sense of unease. Some avoid dealing with things by suppressing how they feel, thereby squashing the real self. It may be easier to escape by looking for instant gratification to distract ourselves, which can end up wreaking havoc on our lives. We can end up checking out of ourselves and losing sight of what is really going on until it resurfaces as some kind of reactive behaviour or impulsive decision.
-
We can end up protecting ourselves with coping mechanisms that keep us from reaching our real strivings. Once we learn how to tune into ourselves, we can get a better handle on life, rather than falling victim to circumstance. It takes the therapeutic guidance to gain better control of oneself. Once we connect with ourselves, we connect with others. Once we feel aligned with ourselves, everything else falls into place as we build a stronger foundation for ourselves.
